MODES OF TRANSPORTATION IN NYC

UBER, LYFT, VIA - These ride share car services have taken over as the preferred mode of travel around the city. Frequently cheaper than a taxi, these are apps you get on your smartphone that allow you to order a car to pick you up and drop you off at your desired destination, and it gets charged to your smartphone app (you must have a credit card to purchase credits). https://uber.com https://lyft.com https://ridewithvia.com

TAXI - Taxis can be very expensive depending on where you are going, and various surcharges now apply - from the Rush Hour Surcharge between 4pm - 8pm, and the New York State Congestion Surcharge of $2.50 for all trips that begin, end or pass through Manhattan south of 96th Street. They do take credit cards so that may come as a relief on long cab rides. Please always look on the front hood for the NYC Medallion that shows that the taxi is legitimate. ALWAYS ask for a receipt -- you never know, one day you might leave something in the taxi and have no idea whom to call, or you may need to make a complaint. When the light on the taxi is on, the taxi is available: simply raise your hand and wave as the taxi approaches. If the taxi light is off, the taxi is not available.

SUBWAY - Right now subway and buses are $2.25 with a free transfer (free for 1 transfer to another subway or bus line). It can be extremely hot in the summer and dirty. It is relatively fast. Check out their Metrocards for more discounts. new.mta.info

BUSES - Great if you have extra time and a taxi is hard to get. $2.25 per trip. Get a Metrocard nearly anywhere, including in the subway stations. A great way to see your surroundings and neighborhoods. Check out Metrocards for more discounts. new.mta.info

CAR SERVICE - The most expensive mode of transportation here. Usually a flat fee and good for borough-to-borough riding. TRANSPORTATION

BIKING - NYC is trying to be more bike friendly by adding bike lanes, but it still is a dangerous mode of transportation in the city. It can be very difficult to navigate the New York City traffic, amid pedestrians and people entering and exiting taxis. It is a challenge to "park" it on the street and not have it stolen. If you want a bike for exercise, take designated bike routes or pedal around Central Park. Wear your helmet and body pads! TRANSPORTATION

WALKING - Of course, the healthiest way to travel. A great way to see your neighborhood.
