HEALTH AND SAFETY

Your life, liberty and the pursuit of your happiness all rely on you being healthy and safe! Here are some tips on how to keep yourself safe and sane in The Big Apple.

MENTAL HEALTH - A good attitude and a healthy outlook are important, but we all have times when these are in short supply. There are times when even friends can't help you fix what is bothering you, and acting class is not the place to work out your troubles. If you are having problems in a relationship, at work, or just having difficulties adjusting to your new life in the city, consider going to therapy. A therapist can help you to cope and/or make necessary changes in your life to move forward, maintain your equilibrium and to help you deal with new challenges. This will only enhance your life and your career.

Therapy can help you acquire critical insight while exploring the Human Condition - how people feel emotions and think their thoughts - that is essential in creating a character. Your talent depends upon drawing on your imagination, and personal experiences inform that imagination.

Some people believe that therapy is only for weak, "sick" people. This is untrue. In fact, it shows inner strength to ask for help. As for the cost, many therapists have a sliding scale to accommodate clients with limited resources, and most insurance plans offer some mental health coverage. If you need therapy and can truly benefit from it, find a way to afford it. Some people can't afford NOT to have therapy! HEALTH

PHYSICAL HEALTH - We need you healthy and strong. New York has millions and millions of people you'll come in contact with each day. Go to a gym, visit a doctor, take your vitamins, wash your hands, get plenty of rest, and drink plenty of water. HEALTH

HEALTH INSURANCE - This is so important. Perhaps you are still covered under your parents, or a company you are working for. If you have no insurance at all, it could be very expensive; if you break your leg, you'd have to pay several thousands of dollars in medical bills. If you can't afford individual insurance, I'd look into major medical plans that only cover you when your medical problems require hospitalization. These plans seem to be reasonable. Although they will not cover every visit to a doctor, the coverage is affordable, and if you are young and healthy, it may be a good way to go. HEALTH

FREE CLINICS - Keep these places handy so you know where to turn to when you are really sick. Try and bring someone with you. These clinics tend to be very busy and it's great to have a friend there to listen to what the doctor says. HEALTH

SAFETY - Contrary to popular belief, NYC is a clean and very safe city. Like any other metropolitan city, your safety relies mostly on your common sense. So please bring it and use it! Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Carry your wallet in your front pocket; wear your purse strap over your alternate shoulder; don't walk alone on dark quiet streets; don't engage in conversation with strangers on the streets. This may sound like extreme caution, but until you are fully adapted to city life, err on the side of caution and keep your guard up.

If you do have an emergency, call 911.
