LOS ANGELES VS NEW YORK CITY

If you want to pursue acting as a business, you first must decide where to pursue it. While many cities offer opportunities to be an actor (Chicago, San Francisco or Boston come to mind), the two biggest hubs in this business are Los Angeles and New York City. Certainly you can have a career in those other locations, and perhaps have more opportunities to play roles you might not have in larger markets; there is something to be said for being a "Big Fish in a Little Pond". Most actors, though, choose between L.A. and NYC.

Here are some pros and cons for each locale:

Los Angeles: L.A. has great weather, which is great for an outdoor lifestyle. If primarily pursuing Film or Television, then Los Angeles would be your best bet. There is much more television, commercials and film that shoot in L.A., as it is cheaper than in New York and the (mostly) consistent mild weather allows year-round filming. Some cons include that infamous traffic, the fact that you MUST have a car, and that there is less opportunity for live theatre.

New York: to us, it is the center of the world! No city can surpass New York in its arts, food, diversity of cultures and languages, colleges and universities, medical centers, finance, and in its importance to corporate America. As the song says, "If you can make it here, you'll make it anywhere" - there is a reason so many songs are written about New York. It is considered the top, the standard against which all other cities are measured.

Theatre is best pursued in New York because it has a thriving theatre scene -there is a plethora of all types of theatre. Can you still pursue a Film and/or Television career in NYC? Yes, of course, and there are some advantages in New York: a smaller pool of actors sometimes makes it easier. Also, all major networks are located in NYC, so even though a series may shoot in L.A., the casting can be done here. Some cons to NYC: the harsh winter weather, and that so many people are packed into such a small area (of course, that is also part of what makes it so exciting to live here).

So, which city should you choose? The bottom line is: choose the city that is the best fit for you in both lifestyle and in your artistic field of interest.
